How to Configure Google Public DNS for Windows XP

Google has recently launched public DNS service, which would increase the page loading speed. It an welcoming note for the Internet user to make web page load faster than ever. I am going to teach you how to configure Google public DNS for your Windows XP computer.

Before we could start, I want you to let you know what is DNS? According to Wikipedia "The Domain Name System (DNS) is a hierarchical naming system for computers, services, or any resource connected to the Internet or a private network. It associates various information with domain names assigned to each of the participants. Most importantly, it translates domain names meaningful to humans into the numerical (binary) identifiers associated with networking equipment for the purpose of locating and addressing these devices worldwide. An often used analogy to explain the Domain Name System is that it serves as the "phone book" for the Internet by translating human-friendly computer hostnames into IP addresses. For example, www.example.com translates to 208.77.188.166." In simple words if you want to call someone on your mobile phone, you need to look up their telephone number.

Setup Google Public DNS for Windows XP

1. Open Control Panel and navigate to "Network and Internet Connections"

2. Then click Network and Internet Connections

3. Now select your active Internet connection and right click on it. Suppose if you are using wireless connection right click on "Wireless Network Connection"

4. Select the TCP/IP service in the list and then click properties

5. Now select "Use the following DNS server addresses and enter 8.8.8.8 as preferred DNS server and 8.8.4.4 as alternate DNS server.(Note: Do not enter these information on the "Use the following IP address" text box. It is recommended to select Obtain an IP address automatically")

Now your done, click Ok and close the TCP/IP window. Give around seconds for the change of DNS to take effect. If you are not able to connect to the Internet, try rebooting you computer. If you still not able to connect to the Internet, follow the same procedure and in the TCP/IP properties window select "Obtain DNS server automatically".
