Membership Pro is another amazing membership plugin which is available in both free and paid version. The free version does offer certain features, so I recommend buying a pro version. This plugin works for single WordPress site, multisite and Buddypress.

Essentially Membership allows you to transform your WordPress, WPMU or BuddyPress site into a fully functional membership site – where you can provide access to downloads, online content, videos, forums, support and more through flexible membership levels and options.

This is another great plugin through which you can set subscription based on one time or recurring basis. The other feature which I liked the most was the option to limit post length for free. So in order to read the full post, users are required to pay the subscription amount.

  1. Hey, Thanks a lot for this article and nice website!

By the way, which membership plugin did you end up selecting for your membership project? Me personally I’m really starting to like s2Member. Have you tried that one?

    Thanks a lot!

  2. Franklin, I hope you don’t mind me being a little self-promotional by mentioning Paid Memberships Pro. We’re one of the only completely GPL membership plugins out there.

Currently, the plugin handles onsite checkouts via PayPal Website Payments Pro and Authorize.net. Support for offsite payments, including free PayPal accounts, is coming shortly.

    In the WP repo: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/paid-memberships-pro/

    The support site: http://www.paidmembershipspro.com/

We’re looking for contributors who can help us make this a truly open source membership solution for WordPress. Thanks!

  3. A good start, but you missed a couple of big players out, namely Digital Access Pass and ourselves (Your Members), which is odd as you covered Magic Members which was originally based on a very old version of the Your Members code base and eventually officially licensed, but since then the two products have gone in different directions. MM initially improved the UI and added a few payment gateways, where as YM focused on new features such as adaptive pricing, secure video streaming and allowing your content and membership to work seamlessly inside Facebook! These days, despite the product’s common heritage, there is no comparing the two!

  4. First of all, thank you for the great review!
I just want to add something. Membership plugin should have various direct Payment Gateway integrations so that you can pick the one you like or use them all. Magic Members has many integrations. Their PayPal Pro and Authorize.Net integrations gives you the ability to take payments in your site without sending your customers to the payment gateway’s site which increase conversion rates.

  5. Having a membership helps in encourages interaction between readers and helping each other. It requires a certain amount of readership before we can consider starting a membership site. I have no plans yet but this post will come handy if i decide to set up one in future.

    Thanks for sharing the knowledge.

  6. Nice list. They are indeed the best membership plugins on the market. We switched to Magic Members lately. We were usually using different membership plugins on different projects since every customer requests a unique feature. With Magic Members we can use Roles and Capabilities easily. It saves us a lot of time and also allows us to use different free plugins to integrate with it.
We also like the ability to purchase multiple membership level with multiple payment gateway.

  7. SoftPay Solutions has a secure plug-in that is hosted on PCI compliant servers. It takes 3 lines of code to add the plug-in to a web page. You can accept payments on your website using an Authorize.Net gateway account and you don’t need to worry about PCI compliance because they host the plug-in for you.

    Demo the plug-in at: http://softpaysolutions.com/Products.aspx?pid=2

  8. Informative review thanks for sharing…….

  9. can you recommend which plugin would be best for membership management + a storefront selling physical & digital goods

  10. hmm really good ..like it

  11. I’m using Wishlist Member in all of my membership sites, since I found it to be the easiest plugin to work with and the UI is quite simple. Also, Wishlist has great support team and they solved every problem I had very quickly. I highly recommend giving it a try.

  12. awesome tips like it

  13. I’m looking for a WordPress plugin to run a Membership site, and found your reviews via a Google search.

Thanks for sifting through the plugins available to pick 5 of the best, and thanks for the helpful reviews

  14. Hi,

We would appreciate it if you would include DigitalAccessPass.com (DAP) in your review. DAP is among the top membership plugins for wordpress (arguably top 3), and it would be a shame for your readers to not know and consider DAP as a possible option in their research for the best membership plugin.

  15. I can vouch for DAP (digital access pass). Unfortunately, a lot of plugins that are created do not consider that a lot of people do not like to deal with PayPal (for very good reasons). I thought DAP was a Godsend when I found it because I looked hard for a membership plugin that had Google_checkout integration. I personally don’t like taking the risk of having my money frozen indefinitely (something PayPal does frequently). Love DAP and it comes highly recommended by a lot of people (that’s how I found it).

  16. I really like an idea of truly open source membership product.
I know aMember very well, as i have worked on many projects with aMember pro.

If you are a programmer, and want to start a free membership site, you will definitely not pay $179, and if there is an open source membership product, it will be really helpful to whole world.

  17. Michael Rogers

If you compare os commerce, wordpress and magento, of course magento would be more stable and professional. You will need more powerful hosting for magento, but other than that it’s same expenses in future. I saw a private sale solution, developed by Plumrocket company. I think you can find it on their site. Its basically a package of magento extensions and magento private sales theme. You can also extend it with cart reservation, magento invite friends functionality with ability to import address book and magento reward points extension. If you really like Fab.com or Gilt.com you can add some magento social shopping extensions such as live feed plugin, inspiration wall, faves… etc.

  18. I’m currently looking at MemberPress to manage premium content for a poetry site I’m working on with a client. So far, loving it. http://www.memberpress.com
