5 Tips for Writing Effective Website Copy

As a small business owner, you wear many hats. One of them is often website copywriter, and it’s an important one. You want your website to encourage customers to choose you, and good copy is the key. These five tips for writing effective website copy for your small business will help keep you on track and writing great copy.

copywriting tips

1. Show you can solve your customer’s problems

You may think your product is super cool, but unless you can show how it solves your customer’s problems, they won’t care. Your website copy needs to demonstrate how you can help them. Always keep your customer’s needs and desires in mind. After you write something, stop and look at from your customer’s perspective. Does what you said really meet their needs?

2. Keep it short and sweet

Your customers’ patience for sifting through tons of information is non-existent. Your website content needs to be compelling enough to grab their attention within just a few seconds. Otherwise they will click off the page and go elsewhere.
The key to doing this is keeping your copy short and focused. Every paragraph needs to have a specific purpose and you need to get to the point quickly.

3. Use natural keywords

It is important that the copy reads naturally from both a readers perspective and for search engines. So avoid over using SEO keywords and think about what your real customers will find valuable. If you have to struggle to make a keyword fit into a page, chances are it doesn’t belong there in the first place.

4. Make it readable

How you position your copy on the website is as important as what it says. The human eye travels left to right, so make sure important items are top left and to the right. Also, most website visitors will quickly scan a page before actually reading the text. Use headings to draw their attention to important pieces of information. Using bulleted lists is also a good way to break up text and make it easier to read on a screen.

Finally, check your spelling. Proper grammar and spelling will make your site easier—and more pleasurable—to read. It sounds like an obvious thing but it is easily overlooked and the consequences are very unprofessional.

5. Stay current

Your website content needs to be dynamic. You need to update it regularly. That’s easy to do with a website, and your customers expect it. It can be as simple as a new offer, showcasing a new products, or staff changes. In addition to keeping your customers informed, an updated website will score higher in search engine rankings. So keep it current.
