The Net (1995)

One of the first major Hollywood films to feature the internet was the crime thriller, The Net. Sandra Bullock stars as a socially isolated, freelance computer expert, Angela Bennett, who uncovers the crooked dealings of a huge software company. Wanting to silence her, they steal her identity and send a killer, Jeremy Northam, after her. The film spawned a TV series, also called The Net. This ran from 1998-1999 and starred Brooke Langton as Angela Bennett. While debugging a system, she discovers a sinister organization which plans to control the world using the internet. They erase Bennett’s identity and she struggles to save the world. The TV series only ran for one season.

You’ve Got Mail (1998)

One of the most successful romantic comedies of the 1990s, You’ve Got Mail was directed by Nora Ephron and starred Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. The film is a must in any movie and TV series collection and is included in many dvd box sets. Hanks and Ryan play two people who dislike each other in real life, but fall in love by communicating incognito over the internet.

The Social Network (2010)

The Social Network stars Jesse Eisenberg as Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook. The film had the tagline, ‘you don’t get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies.’ It portrayed Zuckerberg’s early days at Harvard and the legal and personal problems that arose when Facebook became successful. Directed by David Fincher and written by Aaron Sorkin, the film was nominated for 8 categories in Oscars in 2011 and won three.

Catfish (2012)

Catfish is a television show aired on MTV that is currently in its second series. It is a documentary show featuring real-life couples who have only met online. Many of them have had a virtual romantic relationship for years, and the series explores their feelings when they meet in the real world. The title, Catfish, is a slang word for putting false information on social media sites, such as a photo of a much prettier person, in order to attract a partner.
